High Midnight Holy

(17 Lormesta 5115: The Landing)

Songs spun in her head, none clear. Peace, reflection, and sanctuary had not helped. With a confused sigh, she walked out of the wing of memory and down the stairs; midnight was calling in the echoes of her soul. And while twilight’s first touch of dark was a sacred time for the Lord of Dreams, sometimes a thing required midnight.

The shrine was empty except for her and the flame. Here she waited soundlessly, but for the flickering light and sounds of the flame. All the music was in her heart. The melancholy strains of the song about yesterdays first played across her soul. She watched the images in the font. There were no faces this time, no colors. Not even His.

The melody lingered as a backdrop to her prayers. She questioned how, if… why, and when. All of her doubts, she laid at the altar. When she was spent, she leaned against the very same altar, looking for support.

The song in her head transitioned into another unfinished fragment. This time it was a tender, simply sweet lead.  She let herself just experience the tune and leave the questioning behind her as she listened to the song of the fire in the dark.

As midnight approached (where did the time go?) she focused on the reflections in the font. Staring at them,  she prayed in a soft cadence, swaying slightly to and fro. In the back of her mind, she realized there was no more music going through her. But it didn’t matter.

Flames began to glimmer in red and scarlet, orange and yellow. As her hand touched the water, she could feel the comfort of the Lord of Dreams, she could see His figure, all in answer to her prayers. There was no danger of losing her way when she followed Him. The future was hopeful for her.

She stood up, the pain and sorrows left on the holy ground, and joined the rest of the world again. Refreshed, encouraged, and focused.

She smiled.
